At last, there is an Indian River County organization that is laser-focused on the public and private solutions of our county. Inspired by the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition and the Rivers Coalition of Martin County, several leaders of local civic groups have formed the Clean Water Coalition of Indian River County. Our new organization’s vision is for “the surface and ground waters of Indian River County to be clean and healthy, the foundation of our social environmental and economic well-being for future generations.” We aim to precipitate action on immediate and long-range projects to accomplish our vision for our community.
Wayne Mills, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, has compared the conditions here to those faced in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and found them strikingly similar. He advises us that the same solutions applied there could be applied here if we all civic, business, governmental and environmental organizations work together. Thus, the Indian River Neighborhood Association, the Coastal Conservation Association and Pelican Island Audubon Society have initiated this focus on cleaning up our waters and welcome all other community organizations to join us.
Officers of the new Clean Water Coalition of IRC are Paul Fafeita, President; Mark Yanno, 1st VP, Judy Orcutt, 2nd VP; Randy Old, Treasurer; Donna Halleran, Secretary. Other board members include Dr. Richard Baker, Honey Minuse, Mike Walther, Charles Pope, George Glenn and Carter Taylor. All board members are actively engaged in environmental issues in our county.
The public is invited to a meeting introducing the new organization on January 17th, at 7 pm at the River House, 305 Acacia Rd., Vero Beach. Dr. Edie Widder, founder of Ocean Research & Conservation Association will be guest speaker. Her topic will be,” The Impact Florida Algae Blooms Have On Our Economy and Our Health.”
