The Cultural Council of Indian River County announces the publication of its Arts & Cultural Guide 2020-2021, a testament to optimism and resiliency in the cultural arts community. The popular 12-month guide is a singular reference for residents and visitors to plug in to events, exhibits, concerts and classes happening throughout the county and throughout the year. Anyone can pick up the Guide at the Cultural Council office located in the Flametree Clay Art Gallery, 2041 14th Avenue, or around town at various locations including;

Museum Reopened – The Vero Beach Museum of Art is pleased to announce it has reopened its galleries and sculpture parks to the public on Wednesday, October 7.  The Museum’s new health, procedural, and cleaning protocols and restrictions are outlined below:

  • Facemasks are required for all visitors’ ages 2+
  • Temperatures will be taken for anyone entering the Museum
  • 6ft social distancing guidelines are to be maintained
  • Visitors will be encouraged to regularly wash their hands

The higher-touch areas in the building, including the auditorium, ArtZone, and Museum Café, will remain closed until further notice, and there will be no group tours in the first stage of reopening. Some public programs, such as Art Talks, Film Studies, and the Museum Art School classes, will be offered online, at least for the fall.  The Museum is opening under new hours of operation: Monday and Tuesday: CLOSED, Wednesday – Saturday: 10 am – 4:30 pm, Sunday: 1 – 4 pm. The Best of the Best Juried Exhibition – AE Backus Museum & Gallery On view through November 13. The popular annual competition yields the best works of art in a variety of media from artists across the state and beyond. A jury panel of three independent judges voted to accept 103 entries out of 233 submissions in four media categories: Oil/Acrylic Painting, Watercolor, Varied Techniques, and Three-Dimensional. An Outdoor Revolution exhibit by Brian LaPersonerie

An Outdoor Revolution is here! Now on display at the Environmental Learning Center. Photographer Brian LaPersonerie will have his amazing nature photography on display in the Lagoon Room until November 22. His nature photography is showcased on metal prints and features images of wildlife, nature scenes and outdoor lifestyle shots. The images in “An Outdoor Revolution” aim to transport you to the healing reality of the great outdoors. View Brian’s collection, “An Outdoor Revolution” at the Environmental Learning Center until November 22. Gallery 14 presents Calming Influences –  Work by Gallery 14 Artists On View through November 27. In October the Gallery will be open: Thursday – Saturday, 11:00am – 3:00pm. Art in Public Places Program sponsored by the Cultural Council of Indian River County.   The Cultural Council’s AIPP Program, in partner with Vero Beach Regional Airport in the Passenger Lounge waiting area presents. Art For Art’s Sake –  Art in Social Isolation.  During this period of Social Distancing caused by the pandemic, the Cultural Council initiated a project as an attempt to see how creative individuals in the area responded to it. It has been almost 6 months since ART FOR ARTS SAKE’s inception…and we have been continually receiving wonderful images of work created by area Artists. Memories of places near and far…happy times spent with family and friends…pride and patriotism of Country…these are several of the themes that are resonating at this time.  On View through January 1, 2021.

Online Events

New online Art Appreciation Series at the VBMA

This fall join VBMA Senior Curator Anke Van Wagenberg in a series of expansive dialogues on the ways art is defined and understood throughout time. Enjoy listening and learning through a series of online classes drawing on highlights from the VBMA’s permanent collection and masterpieces of art history. All classes will be online with content brought to participants through thematic power point presentations offered via Zoom. Each session will include the opportunity for questions and further dialogue. Classes are on Fridays at 11:30 am – 12:30 pm and begin October 9 through October 30, 2020.

  • October 16: Basics of Art History Learn about the interpretive tools of the trade: form, content, iconography, and style. 
  • October 23: Valuing Art Explore the value of art beyond monetary value, from intrinsic to patriotic.
  • October 30: Form Matters Investigate the qualities of line, space, perspective, and color, drawing on Alexander Calder as a prime example.

New online Fall Film Series starts at the VBMA 

This fall join the VBMA in a series of five-week courses of films selected from the finest in classic and contemporary cinema. They will be part of a slightly different Film Studies course as the Museum offers each series as an online, streaming format for students to view at home. Film Studies 2 Bright Lights: Favorite Luminaries from the Entertainment World begins on November 17 through December 15, 2020. This course pays tribute to some of our favorite stars of stage and screen with a selection of five films that spotlight why we fell in love with them. We’ll peek in on an unusual performance from Burt Reynolds, a special local favorite here in Florida. You may be surprised by the unique “foreign” film, “Snapshots,” where he paired up with Julie Christie, in Amsterdam. Besides Burt, we’ll visit four others from a wide range of both American and international celebrities. Students may sign up for either the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. or the evening session at 7 p.m. as part of the five-week film studies offering. VBMA Exhibition Avery to Warhol Through- January 3, 2021The VBMA Avery to Warhol is an exhibition of our new Senior Curator, Anke Van Wagenberg’s selections from the vault. The exhibition will showcase a recent gift to the collection, Henry Hubbell’s Portrait of Three Sisters. From this 1903 painting, we will virtually travel through the twentieth century from the paintings by Milton Avery to Andy Warhol and not only contemporary masters but also selections of the glass collection of the VBMA. View the movies on your own at home using our free HOOPLA system at the Library or any way you can. Then join online for a ZOOM discussion of the film with Joe Gramm, The Movie Man. Following the discussion take part in a Movie Trivia Contest with prizes for the winners. Friends of the North IRC Library – Fall Programs for Children Thanks to Facebook live, Story Time still happens every Thursday at 10:00am. Each week a new “Grab & Go Story Time Kit” is available for pick-up. The kits include a stick puppet, a list of rhymes  and suggested books, instructions for a STEM activity and the supplies needed to make that week’s craft. Halloween will also feature a Zoom/Grab and Go event on October 29th at 4:00pm. We look forward to seeing all of our friends in costume, even if it has to be virtually this year. The City of Vero Beach Recreation Department – Gymnastics Registration Saturday, October 17th, 8am at Leisure Square. There are gymnastics and aerial classes available for beginners through advanced students. The performance-based program offers instruction for toddlers through teens! Receive training from the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department’s USA Gymnastics Safety Certified Instructors. Weekday and Saturday classes are available to fit every schedule. Indian River’s Got Talent is Here! Environmental Learning Center is presenting a new and exciting event  Indian River’s Got Talent! Now accepting submissions from all ages! Submission deadline January 15, 2021. All types of talents accepted from youth in grades 12 and under. Categories for entry are based on grade level or age;

  • Elementary school – Kindergarten thru 5th grade
  • Middle school – 6th thru 8th grade
  • High school – 9th thru 12th grade
  • Adult Division – ages 18 & Up
  • Combination Acts – family talent groups

Submit an up to a two-minute video of any talent suitable for public viewing. Submissions can be one person or up to as many participants you would like.  Please only submit one entry per person. Please email IRGT@DiscoverELC.org for questions.

“Keeping The Arts Alive” – Applications due October 22, Raw Space, 1795 Old Dixie HWY, Vero Beach. ART DROP-OFF DATE: NOVEMBER 2. This is an invitation for artists to participate in a new art show, “Keeping The Arts Alive,” sponsored and produced by local artists Camy De Mario, Judy Burgarella and Beth Siebert. Deadline for submitting Applications is October 22nd, and drop-off date for artwork is November 2nd (see application for specific times). Applications can be picked up at Raw Space Gallery, 1795 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach, Florida, or artists can find the application online at www.keepingtheartsalive.com and apply within the online form.
