WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) – A lot of Florida Power and Light customers in south Florida who lost power and shivered in the freezing cold the weekend of January 9-10 are taking FPL to court.
Attorneys for tens of thousands of FPL customers in Broward and Palm Beach County have just filed a class-action lawsuit, accusing FPL of negligence.
The lawsuit says quote: “…old, undersized or otherwise inadequate FPL transformers were incapable of handling the energy load imposed upon them…”

This situation is actually good news for the possible sale of the COVB utility service to FP&L because the corporation would be more aware of the probability of future law suits if they attempt to shortchange the Indian River County ratepayers.
Law suits are the very kinds of things most likely to get the attention of senior management which is the only real source of correcting any problems.
If the COVB does not proceed, there is no guarantee that they also will not have to deal with future lawsuits.
You might share your thoughts with FPL’s public relations department. They may not have though of this one yet.
Mark,—- Glen Haron, Citizens for Brighter Future, Tax Payers Association, Mary Beth McDonald, AL TURNER age 64- His wife sits on City Council and he is involved in the in the propaganda being sent out. This entire FPL thing smells to high heaven. Close to a million dollars this past year to Attorney’s that failed to comply. Failing to have open bids is incompetance. BAD DEAL for 34,000 rate payers. Blacked out by VB Press Journal on the class action suit against FPL. Can we not call for an investiagation to just what is going on here?
Not feeling good about this
Elizabeth edleman, believe fraud, they have charged me 22.00 per month for a service that did not exist
I don’t notice any difference tween the transformers in city limits and out side the city grid. this sounds like a lawsuit that wont go anywhere.
You can bet that FPL won’t be using Google to find legal assistance.
All depends on if you know what you are looking at. And are you aware the city electric service grid is past the 13 square miles that is the city?
There are other articles I’ve read in the Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post – many cities claim FPL has either overcharged for work done, claimed to have done work when there was none done, and have also forgotten to charge cities for work done.
I am well aware where the city grid is. it ends nearest me at at timber ridge and oslo. The traffic light on oslo and us1 is powered by the city of vero beach.Fpl isn’t a utility I really like I have been charged for usage that I didn’t get. How they read the meters and assumed that the meters turned when they cant is criminal in nature to me.
Funny, I don’t remember being without power last January or being particularly uncomfortable. But we’re on Vero Beach Utilities. I’ll count my blessings, good fortune, whatever.
I didn’t loose power either but I am on fpl as well. I do remember years ago that It was routine every cold snap to have a power outage for a few hours or at the most a day.
Spnl ripping off people for their deposit they ripped me off for $57 of my deposit for a final bill that was 220 $2.84 my deposit was 280 $5.01 they billed me for another month of one day service from August for a 2015 to September 5th 2015 of 124 dollars
