Indian River Shores voters Tuesday elected two newcomers to the Town Council and returned one of two incumbents to a second term.
The council’s newest members, set to be sworn in Friday morning at 8:30, are Tom Slater and Brian Barefoot. Slater is a retired auto industry executive who now heads a family-owned business. Barefoot is the retired president of Babson College in Massachusetts. Slater and Barefoot both reside in John’s Island.
Of the two incumbents who ran for re-election, Indian River Shores voters returned current vice mayor Gerald (Jerry) Weick to the council. Incumbent Mike Ochsner came in fifth in the vote count.
Former councilman Chuck Wurmstedt, who previously served on the council from 1993 to 2001, ran fourth in the voting, just one vote ahead of Oschner.
Official Vote Count:
Tom Slater: 998 votes, 32.78 percent
Brian Barefoot: 994 votes, 32.65 percent
Gerald (Jerry) Weick: 357 votes, 12.31 percent
Chuck Wurmstedt: 339 votes, 11.13 percent
Mike Ochsner: 338 votes, 11.1 percent
