Island weekly again in need of correction

BY MARK SCHUMANN

The island weekly published a front page story this week in which is again misrepresented facts.  Specifically, the paper attempted to create the impression that I should have governed myself by the Scripps Newspapers code of ethics when I made a contribution to the Voices For Vero political action committee.  In fact, I resigned from my position as the editor of the Scripps Newsweekly two months before making the contribution.

The island weekly also inaccurately used the word “termination” in reference to my employment with Scripps.  The editors of the island weekly know well that I resigned from my positon with Scripps after being directed by the publisher of Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, Bob Brunjes, who is the husband of a key Florida Power & Light employee, to no longer report on  FPL’s attempts to purchase Vero Electric.

Anyone who is still reading the island weekly knows there is no love lost between Milton Benjamin, the publisher of the island weekly, and Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers  What can be said?  Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

  1. Thank you for having the moral fortitude to stand up to a very biased press. And, thank you for resigning from the Scripps organization based on your “freedom of the press” principals.
I do not read the east side news magazine that you mention in this article so I am not aware of what they print but…..does it really matter? I think not.

  2. Bea, it does matter what the zip code prints because people believe what they read. The launch of their off shoot, Vero News happens next week.
