Mayor Fletcher’s apology

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Craig Fletcher declined to issue a formal apology for controversial comments he made at the June 4 City Council meeting.

Instead, the Mayor said, a brief email sent to the editorial page editor of the Press Journal on June 11 would suffice.  Facing almost certain rebuke from local ministers, Fletcher sent the following email to Larry Reisman last Thursday as the ministers were meeting.

Larry:

I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to anyone whom I may have offended by my remarks last Tuesday at the City Council meeting.

It was a horrific statement and on reflection was way out of place for an elected official to take such a stance.  I hope everyone will find it in their heart to forgive me.

  1. Mayor Fletcher’s apology reminded me of something I wrote years ago: “He who never apologizes is definitively ruthless. He who incessantly apologizes is predictably timid. He who apologizes of necessity and in good faith shows wisdom and is known as a sensitive yet courageous citizen.”

Thank you Mayor Fletcher for wisdom and courage to offer apology.
