Despite the “news,” it was a quiet week in Vero Beach

COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note:  If the island tabloid would publish less frequently during the summer months, perhaps its editors would not be so inclined to make mountains out of molehills.  Unsuspecting readers of this week’s issue of the local version of the National Enquirer could find it hard to sleep at night, if, that is, they buy into the fear mongering.

Before installing four deadbolt locks on every exterior door, consider this; there are at least a few disgruntled employees at the Sheriff’s Office who have yet to accept the results of the November election.

Just as the Tea Party crowd hates that President Obama remains in the White House, these disgruntled Sheriff’s Office employees seem unable to accept the fact that Sheriff Deryl Loar will be in office at least through 2016.

These well-paid malcontents also seem to have a hot line to the island tabloid.  It appears that if so much as a roll of toilet paper shows up missing in the county jail, they are on the phone, in hopes a piece of classic yellow journalism will soon follow.

That may be what happened this past week, when the island tabloid made a front page story out of an open exterior door to a utility room.  Read the following as fact, if you choose, or read it for entertainment.  Or, move on to something more important.

Door left open raises new concerns about jail security

An Indian River County Jail maintenance worker is being docked 40 hours of pay after being accused of leaving an exterior utility room door open, the same type of room two dangerous inmates used when they escaped  nearly two years ago.

The June incident prompted a 157-page internal affairs investigation that raises renewed concerns about jail security and access to the utility rooms that lead outside of the facility.

  1. as silly as that sound to those not familiar with corrections, that is a REAL issue. is it newsworthy? depends on whom wants to know remember that two murders did escape. however, given the the source of the news. its really pathetic.

  2. Yes, some (or a lot) of us are aware of the rancor toward Sheriff Loar from supporters of his most recent opponent. It almost makes one believe that the office of Sheriff should be filled by County Manager and Commissioners via applications. That wouldn’t necessarily mean the best candidate received the job but it might mend the division in our county law enforcement team. We need them working together.
