Deputies with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrested 15 year old Johnathan Martin today after he pointed what turned out to be pellet gun at retired Vero Beach Police Chief Jim Gabbard.

The initial report notes that Chief Gabbard was driving east on 16th Street near the Charter High School at around 11:45AM when he saw  Martin waiting at a Go-Line bus stop with what appeared to be a handgun.  As Chief Gabbard drove by the bus stop, Martin raised the gun and pointed it at him. Chief Gabbard followed the vehicle to the next stop near Indian River State College and boarded the bus. He approached Martin and asked where the gun was. Martin reached into his waistband and Chief Gabbard took the gun from him.  It turned out to be a pellet gun. Chief Gabbard notified our communications center and deputies were dispatched.

Deputies were on the scene in about 3 minutes and arrested Martin for aggravated assault with a firearm. Martin is being booked into the Indian River County Jail as of this writing and will likely be transferred to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice this afternoon.

There were no reported injuries and Martin is not believed to be a student at the Charter High School although that has not been confirmed. No other details are available at this time.
