Former Vero Beach Mayor Warren Winchester announced yesterday he will run for one of two City Council seats to be filled in a Nov. 5 election.
Incumbents Tracy Carroll and Richard Winger are running for reelection. As of this morning, the field of candidates also includes former Councilman Brian Heady and political newcomers Joseph Guffanti and Amelia Graves. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. today.
Winchester, who has been a strong opponent of the sale of Vero Electric to Florida Power & LIght, at least under the terms currently proposed, served on the Council two years in the 1980s. He served a second two-year term in the 1990s. A retired United States Navy helicopter pilot, Winchester has also served on the Finance Commission, and chaired the Charter Review Commission in 2005.

And he knows more about the city than all the current council combined,no offense to Jay kramer or Dick Winger. It takes years to understand all that running this city entails, and how terribly lucky we’ve been with staff, employees, etc. To offer to contribute his time and energy again is remarkable. This may indicate just how much at risk we are if we don’t fix this bad deal.
