Ruth “Fran” Cary Flick, age 75, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on September 4, 2013, of cancer, at her home surrounded by her family.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church Vero Beach, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Fran’s wish was to be a donor for medical research and then for cremation. The family plans to take her ashes to Shady Hill Cemetery in Hardin County, TN at a later date.
Fran was born in Hardin County, TN on June 28, 1938. She graduated from Savannah Central High School and continued on to receive a degree in Education from Memphis State University in 1961. Fran was a teacher for many years and with Facebook she was reconnected with former students, which was heartwarming.
While at MSU she met and married Richard H. Flick in 1961. They were married for 52 years. Fran and Dick have two children, Phyllis (Palm Springs, CA) and Rick (Vero Beach). Her five grandchildren Jared (28), Clint (24), Luke (18), Landon (6), Lauryn (4) and great granddaughter, Scarlett (2), will miss Grandma Fran / Nana’s unique grandmotherly ways.
Fran, married to a military man, spent many years supporting Dick during deployments and military life. They lived in Millington, TN; Norfolk, VA; Kodiak, AK; Great Lakes, IL; Oahu, HI; Havelock, NC; Guam; and San Diego, CA. They retired to Memphis, but then made the move in 2004 to Vero Beach to be nearer Rick, his wife Robyn, and their children Landon and Lauryn.

Robert “Rob” George Paulus, 47, of Vero Beach, FL passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Indian River Medical Center. Rob was born in Denville, New Jersey and lived in Boca Raton, FL where he graduated from Boca High, Class of 1984. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida in 1990 then moved to Tampa along with his wife Kellie. Twenty years ago they moved to Vero Beach. He had been a stock broker for AG Edwards in Tampa and worked as the Sales Manager at Toyota of Vero Beach. Rob was a member of the University of Florida Quarterback Club, and really enjoyed golf, boating and any day of fishing. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, wife Kellie Paulus, sons Robert George Paulus, Jr., Ryan Gregory Paulus and Reilly Garrett Paulus all of Vero Beach, his mother Helene K. Paulus of Boca Raton, and his miniature schnauzer Cocoa. Rob was preceded in death by his father Dieter Paulus. Glen L. Pierson, 82, of Vero Beach, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Indian River Medical Center.
He was born September 4, 1931 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and had been a resident of Vero Beach since 1971, coming from Philadelphia, PA, where he had attended Temple University.
Glen was a veteran of the US Navy, retiring as a LT. Commander and was a member of The Military Officers Association of America.
He retired from AT&T as a supervisor with 33 years of service.
Glen was active with the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Vero Beach, for 42 years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helena; sons, Glen W. (Cristy) Pierson and Paul E. Pierson both of Coral Springs, FL; daughter, Lauretta Anne Pierson of Bradenton, FL; 2 sisters, Doris (Roger) Ebeling of Lindstrom, MN and Sharon Manneli of Feasterville, PA; and 4 grandchildren, Michael, Andrew “Drew”, James and Shelby Pierson.
A visitation will be held 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8th at the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home, Vero Beach, with a funeral service at Our Savior Lutheran Church to follow at 4 p.m.
