Reader Comment: “These are very sad times.”

32963 LOGOThe 32963 attack on Amelia Graves was appalling. When, exactly, did volunteer work become worthless? What happened to JFK’s challenge…ask not what your country can do for you….? Why, exactly, is idealism, philanthropy, and honor less valued, in their opinion, than small minded, self centered, exclusionary behavior? I’m totally blown away by the attack on Graves’ volunteer work and selfless commitment to others. These are very sad times. – Sue Dinenno

  1. Volunteer work can become worthless to those who have so much money that all you feel you have to do is write a check to a charity so you do not have to mingle with the needy.

  2. Voluteerim is the norm in the careers of many in public service. This is why there is such competition to obtain appointments to the Presidential intern program and many intern positions in the U. S. Congress.

  3. I have never been wealthy, nor is it likely that I would become wealty. I do agree , sadly, that this does happen.i think it would help if the rich did meet and interact with the needy. It may not fully change the world but it would change the world for that person and also remind us all that we are al human.

  4. Working for little or no pay with the disadvantaged is philanthropy. I deeply respect Amelia for her service.

Sadly, the vast majority of those who seek intern positions with the US Congress or others in the higher halls of govenrment are seeking a lifelong attachment to power, prestige and plenty of pay and benefits.

  5. Has 32963 put down Tracy Carroll’s supposed involvement as a volunteer with many groups and special projects? Does it dislike the Peace Corps created so long ago? I don’t really understand their real problem – or maybe I understand it all too well. Thanks, Sue Dinenno, for speaking out!

  6. As someone who was born and raised in Washington, D. C., it has not been my experience that college graudates seek intern positions with the Federal government in order to gain a lifelong attachment. The vast majority of people enjoy the experience and go home to have other career experiences.
