Smith,DwightDwight A. Smith, Jr., 99 passed away October 25, 2013, at Indian River Medical Center.  He was born April 9, 1914, in Spartanburg, SC, and graduated from Furman University, Greenville, SC.  He married Dorothy Haddon Geer, now deceased, of Jonesville, SC, also a graduate of Furman, and they moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1938. He worked as claims manager for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Miami, FL, until 1943. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as an officer in Naval Intelligence and as captain of P. T. 159, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Nine, in the Pacific in World War II. After the war, he moved back to Florida, as Vice-President and manager of Crawford and Company’s Florida, Puerto Rico, and Caribbean operations and lived in Coral Gables, FL until he retired in 1979. He moved to Winter Haven, FL in 1993, and lived there until 1997, when he moved to Indian River Estates, Vero Beach, FL until his death. He was Vice-Chairman of the Retirement Board of the City of Coral Gables, Director of Kiwanis of Coral Gables, Director of The Two Hundred Club, in Who’s Who in the Insurance World and a member of the Legislative Advisory Board to the Insurance Commissioner of Florida. He served as Senior Warden, St Stephens Episcopal Church, Miami, and was a member of St. Pauls’ Episcopal Church, Winter Haven, and St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. He was President of Riviera Country Club, Coral Gables, President of Century Club, Director of Florida Senior Golf Association, A member of the Miami Club, The Tropical Rose Society and the Army-Navy Club of Coral Gables. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Whitney of Sautee-Nacoochee, GA, and three grandchildren: Moragne Whitney and Geer Whitney of Atlanta, GA, and DuGué Whitney Zion of Tempe AZ. A memorial service will be held November 16, 2013, at 2 PM at the St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 475 43rd Ave, Vero Beach, FL 32968, in his memory. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lowther Funeral Services.
