Thelma A. Salomonson, 96, of Vero Beach, FL, and Groton, CT, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 31, 2013, at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. Tatta was a beautiful lady and a great, loving mother. She was a cub scout leader, and enjoyed cooking, golf, boating, fishing, and gardening. She was born on August 25, 1917, the daughter of Eugene and Edvardine (Reinertsen) Larsen of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The Larsens had emigrated to the United States from Norway in 1910. In 1914, Eugene became the head lighthouse keeper at Sankaty Light on Nantucket, where the family lived until his retirement in 1944. Thelma and her five sisters and one brother were almost all born on the island, and all were raised there, attending the local schools and graduating from Nantucket High School. Of all the Larsens, Thelma was the sole survivor. When she was 21, Thelma married Hubert W. Salomonson, of Newton, Massachusetts, on Nantucket, on July 23, 1939. They had met while Hugh worked for an uncle who lived on the island. For 67 years, they enjoyed a long and happy marriage, with homes in Groton, CT, and Key Largo, FL, as Anheuser Busch distributors based in Niantic, CT. After retirement, they eventually settled in Vero Beach, FL. They were both avid sailors and spent many enjoyable hours on the oceans near their homes, and playing golf whenever they were able. Thelma is survived by her two sons, Peter W. Salomonson of Vero Beach, FL, and his wife, Debra, and Stephen W. Salomonson of Groton, CT. She is also survived by granddaughter, Holly A. Donovan and grandson Matthew W. Salomonson, both of Marietta, GA, granddaughter, Heather A. Salomonson of Niantic, CT, granddaughter Stephanie A. Korzeniewski of Oakdale, CT, and 8 great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Nantucket, Mass., at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in memory of Thelma A. Salomonson to: Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum – Sankaty Light Exhibit, 158 Polpis Road, Nantucket, MA, 02554. http://www.lowtherfuneralhome.com/ (11/05/13)
