Nina Belle Barkalow, 92, of Vero Beach, FL passed away November 19, 2013 at VNA Hospice House. She was born November 11, 1921 in Mercer County, Illinois and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 3 years, coming from Yakima Valley, Washington where she raised her daughters. Mrs. Barkalow will be dearly missed by her daughters, Carol J. Vanderheiden of Vero Beach, Bonnie L. Motsinger of Vero Beach, Jerri A. Davis of Richmond, TX and Jean M. Cain of Corpus Christi, TX; sister, Margaret Minkler of Richland, WA; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Robert C. Patricia Gail Beaird, 58, of Vero Beach, passed away on Wednesday, November 20th. She was born to John and Patricia Neely, August 22nd, 1955, in Covina, CA. Patty married Joel A. Beaird on December 24th, 1976, and they lived together in Vero Beach before moving to Fellsmere, FL. Patty was a loving wife and mother of three children. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren away from the city at their property, Lil Bit Ranch, in Fellsmere. Her family is comforted knowing that she is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Patty is survived by her husband, Joel A. Beaird, and three children, Jason Beaird, Jered Beaird and Jenna Power. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren. Mrs. Ann Marie Carter, 52, died November 20, 2013 at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany and lived in Sebastian since 2011 coming from Chicago. She grew up in Orlando and attended Boone High School. She worked as an Accounts Manager for Mobile Locomotive Services in Chicago. She volunteered for the VFW in Chicago and Kentucky. She enjoyed to travel, ride motorcycles, and grew up a great animal lover, especially horses and cats. Survivors include son, Stuart Simpson of Orlando; daughter, Wanda Tomblin of Sebring; mother, Jean Bryant Carter of Orlando; brother, Howard Carter of Orlando. Michael Guarino, 52, of Vero Beach, Florida, died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at VNA Hospice House. He was born September 28,1961 in Poughkeepsie, New York and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 2 years coming from Fort Pierce where he lived for 6 years. Michael moved to Fort Pierce from Fort Lauderdale where he lived for over 20 years. He was a former Assistant Manger for Bennett Auto Supply. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Norton of Ft. John Wilmot “Jack” Mitchell, 91, died peacefully on November 18, 2013 at the Vero Beach VNA Hospice House. Jack was born in Fairfield, Connecticut August 5, 1922, the only child of Harry Mitchell and Kathryne Bock. His prep school years were spent in Florida where he attended the Florida Military Academy in St. Petersburg on a football scholarship, graduating in 1941. Two years later he married his longtime sweetheart, Mary O’Connor in December of 1943. He joined the Army Air Forces in 1942 and was part of the team that developed and taught advanced instrument flying procedures to new pilots at Randolph Field. At the end of WWII he left the Army Air Forces to fly with Trans World Airlines, flying commercial passenger routes throughout the United States. He rejoined, the now renamed, United States Air Force in 1947 serving until his retirement in 1972 with the rank of Colonel after amassing over 16,000 flying hours. During a distinguished Air Force career he served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars; was a pilot during the Eisenhower administration in the 1298th Air Transport Squadron (Special Missions) attached to the 1254th Air Transport Group, the precursor to the Air Force One top security wing, flying the President, Vice President, and US diplomats around the world; served as wing commander at three Military Airlift Command bases stateside; and worked as the top aide to the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon. Following retirement from the Air Force, Jack and Mary moved to Vero Beach where he took a job with Town Island Builders working on construction and development at John’s Island. Soon thereafter he earned his real estate broker’s license and joined the sales team at John’s Island Real Estate Company where he worked until his retirement in 2011. During these years he and a small group of investors opened the Forty-One restaurant on Royal Palm, and he was actively involved in its daily management until the sale of the restaurant in 1990. Following the death of son John from cancer in 1990, he and Mary became involved in philanthropy by supporting and actively fundraising for the Moffit Cancer Center and the VNA & Hospice Foundation. He served on The Board of Directors at both organizations for many years. Jack Mitchell loved Vero Beach and was passionate about preserving the quality of life, that he so enjoyed, for the future of all who might settle here. He will be remembered for his active involvement during the later years of his life with the Indian River Shores town council and his relentless encouragement of neighbors and friends to make a difference in the quality of their town by getting involved in local politics. He is preceded in death by his son, John W. Mitchell, Jr. and wife of 67 years Mary, and survived by his daughter Marja Morris and husband Charles Morris of Decatur Alabama, daughter Sally Mitchell and partner Crispin Spencer of Vero Beach Florida, granddaughter Beth Morris Veigl and husband Edgar Veigl of Cullman Alabama, granddaughter Kathy Morris Jones and husband Steven Jones of Brooklyn New York, great-granddaughters Lily Beth Veigl and Chloe Annabelle Jones, and devoted caregiver Thomas Nesby of Wabasso Florida. A memorial service will be held at the John’s Island Golf Club on Monday November 25, at 10:00 am with a reception to follow. Interment will be in the John’s Island Cemetery in a private ceremony at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the VNA & Hospice Foundation and dedicated to “The Jack and Mary Mitchell Fund for Technology”, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
