IRNA director updates membership on vacation rental issue

Vacation Rental: Status Report
As of this moment in the state of Florida, there is a law preventing local jurisdictions from changing their laws on vacation rentals in cities like Vero Beach. The city’s current law is under assault by a person, who has asserted that our law is unclear. You know the story of how the unelected code enforcement board recently threw our law off the books on that basis. The courts will decide this case in the next few months as to whether this board acted correctly. For now, however, these short term rentals are legal and happening all over the City of Vero Beach.

One way the city would be able to reinstate its long-standing law, and even strengthen it, would be for the State Legislature to amend the Florida Statutes in a way where home rule comes back to our jurisdictions.

We have three state level officials representing our county. They are:

Senator Thad Altman – altman.thad.web@flsenate.gov

Representative Debbie Mayfield – debbie.mayfield@myfloridahouse.gov

Senator Joe Negron – negron.joe.web@flsenate.gov

I encourage you to email them and say you support Senate Bill 356 and House Bill 307, which will return this legislative power to the local governments, where it belongs.

The three aforementioned elected officials will be at a meeting this Thursday at 9 AM at the Vero Beach City Hall. It is one of those rare times when citizens are able to speak publicly to all of their state elected officials at one time.

I encourage you to attend this meeting if you are able, and either way, I hope you’ll contact the above representatives on this issue.

Thank you,

Dan Lamson
