The City of Fellsmere announces it is sponsoring a “Holiday Hunt” to provide food for those in the community who are food insecure during this Holiday season. The hunt is a partnership between the City of Fellsmere and “Hunters Against Hunger,” a licensed 501c3 corporation in Indian River County since January, 2011.
The hunt will occur on 86 acres of land owned by the City of Fellsmere located at the northwest corner of I-95 and CR 512. The hunt will begin Friday, December 13th at 4:00 PM and end no later than Sunday, December 15th at 10:00 PM. The parcel of land is the current home of the Florida Institute of Technology’s Army ROTC obstacle course and the Trailhead Preserve Welcome Center that is currently under construction.
The City of Fellsmere already allows a limited number of hunters to hunt and trap wild hog on the property to prevent damage to the land while it is being developed. The hunters have encountered an abundance of hogs during their hunts, and that abundance presented an opportunity to provide for recipients.
The City of Fellsmere offered to partner with Hunters Against Hunger because of its relationship with the Harvest Food and Outreach Center of Vero Beach. Hunters Against Hunger has been providing wild game to the Center for two years and has an established process for preparing the game for consumption. All costs are borne by group members. If successful, the City of Fellsmere will consider sponsoring future hunts during holidays throughout the year.
