Letter to the Editor: Two pelicans saved by animal control officer

Animal control officer Bruce Dangerfield
Bruce Dangerfield

Three cheers for Officer Bruce Dangerfield who with the help of another officer and two patrons of the dog park this morning was able to capture two pelicans that had cat fish heads lodged in their throats, which was a certain death for these birds.  After removing the cat fish heads the pelicans were in good health and immediately released.  In the back locked section was a diamond back rattle snake which officer Dangerfield captured earlier.  Are we not really happy that the city council did not cut this position as they had earlier wanted to?

Thanks, John Wester

  1. Let me add a 4th cheer for officer Dangerfield who has long been an advocate for a dedicated, fenced, off-leash dog park. Recently, he took a very bad fall, sustaining a serious shoulder injury. We should all be grateful that he is back in the saddle again. He is one of Vero’s finest public servants!

  2. Thank you for sharing the news about the rescued pelicans, Mr. Wester! Bruce Dangerfield has proven himself time after time. He’s a treasure – hope we never forget it. And that rattlesnake doesn’t know how lucky he was to have been caught by Mr. D.

  3. This is definitely a good news story. Unfortunately, not enough people know that the there are so many dedicated public servants in our community working daily to improve the quality of life for both people and animals.
