RICHARD DARCY ‘DICK’ BARRETT, 75, of Sebastian, Florida, passed at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian, Florida peacefully on Thursday February 6, 2014.
He was born to the late Mason and Blanche Barrett on December 17, 1938 in Guilford, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina and was a supporter of their alumni association. He married Thelma Barrett in 1978 and they lived in Mission Viejo, California; Tupelo, Mississippi; and finally settled and retired in Sebastian, Florida.
Mr. Barrett retired from the furniture industry having worked for several furniture companies and owning his own business. He was very passionate about his 40+ year career in furniture industry, which gave him great joy and pride.
He attended the Orchard United Methodist Church in Tupelo, MS.
Mr. Barrett was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Altavista, VA and a member of the Sebastian Elks Lodge #2714, Sebastian, FL. He was a loyal supporter and volunteer for the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA. He was also an avid golfer and was a member of Mission Viejo Country Club in California and the Tupelo Country Club in Mississippi.
“Dick” lived his life with passion, honesty, and a sense of humor that often pushed boundaries in ways that made you think, and laugh. He had a passion for anything “Tarheels.” Carolina sports had precedence over all else on the “to do” list. He enjoyed fishing with his grand kids. He loved John Wayne and Elvis. At the end of the day, there was nothing better than a good scotch, cashews, and the company of his wife Thelma, sitting on the Lanai. He treasured time and travel with his dear friends and family, as they did with him. He embraced life with laughter and an appreciation for those who shared his traditional values of hard work and family. He lived life to the fullest, his way. His presence will be sorely missed and his memory will never grow old.
Richard was a very proud father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Thelma M. Barrett of Sebastian, Florida. His three children, with Sandra Barrett of Downey, California; Kathy Johnson of Palos Verdes Estates, California, Richard Barrett Jr., of Pasadena, California, and Doug Barrett, of Lake Forest, California and stepdaughter Debbie Fields of Sebastian, Florida.
