Obituaries: March 9, 2014

LESLIE VIERLING-BASSEGIO, 60, died March 5, 2014.  She was born in Quantico, Virginia and lived in Slickville, Pennsylvania while wintering in Vero Beach, Florida.  She worked as a financial consultant for the Federal Department of Education.

Survivors include husband of 27 years, Fred Bassegio of Slickville, PA, son, Bryan Matulay (Autum) of Mt. Joy, PA, stepson Vaughan Bassegio (Sonomi) of Lemore, CA, stepdaughter Lisa Crane of Vero Beach, FL, granddaughters Julianna Bassegio and Maci Crane, grandsons Andrew Bassegio and Tyler Hardy, sister Tracy Clawson of Rockwood, PA, several nieces and nephews, special niece Emily, brother-in-laws Frank Bassegio (Margo) of Irwin, PAand Robert Bassegio (Deb) of Rochester, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation,1040 Woodcock Road, Ste. 119, Orlando, FL 32803.  SERVICES: A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

EILEEN G. CALL, 85, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2014, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach. She is survived by her husband, Frank H. Call. A memorial service will be held at The Brennity of Vero Beach, 4:00 pm Sunday, March 23, 2014. Please RSVP for the memorial service, at the Brennity, by calling 772-299-7900.

FLORENCE KATHERINE CAVANAUGH, 70, died on March 4, 2014 at her home in Vero Beach, Florida. Florence was born and raised in New York, NY where she met her husband of 49 years, Joseph Cavanaugh of Vero Beach, FL, who predeceased her in November.  Florence is survived by her daughter, Sharon Anderson, her husband Jim, and Jim’s daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth of Bethel, CT. Florence also leaves behind, her Brother John Mahoney, his wife Nancy, nephews and nieces, and many cousins including Sharon’s Godmother, Ann Marie McGrath. Florence’s dear friends of over 40 years, Robert and Nancy Hansen were by her side when she passed away. Florence was preceded in death by her mother Vera Mahoney, and by her granddaughter Lucy.

A loving wife and mother, Florence was known for her outgoing and friendly nature. She began her career as a secretary at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She held several positions in Retail including at Dress Barn, Dillard’s and most recently Chico’s. Florence owned a clothing store for many years in Cos Cob, CT and was treasurer of her ceramics club at Countryside in Vero Beach.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2014 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Interment will follow in South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL at 1:15 p.m.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in honor of Florence K. Cavanaugh.

JACK W. PURVIS, JR., 51, of Vero Beach,FL, died Thursday, March 6, 2014. He was born October 3, 1962 and had been a life long resident of Vero Beach.

Family will receive friends 5-7 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A graveside service will be held 9:30am, Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Winter Beach Cemetery. 

ROBERT J. WOOD, 70, of Vero Beach, FL passed away on March 6, 2014 at Indian River Medical Center.  He was born December 16, 1943 in Chicago, IL and had been a resident until moving to Vero Beach 4 years ago.  Bob was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Era.  Bob was the owner and operator of R.J. Wood & Associates since 1978. He was also a member and the current Treasurer of The Italian American Civic Association of Vero Beach.
Bob is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara; daughters, Ann Wood and Ellen Connolly, and six grandchildren, all of Chicago, IL. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Sharon Marback. A gathering will be held at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at The Italian American Civic Association, 1600 25th St, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
