Rep. Mayfield’s utility bill to be heard in committee today

MARK SCHUMANN

State Rep. Debbie Mayfield’s water utility regulation bill (HB 813) will be heard in the House Energy and Utilities Subcommittee today at 3 p.m. Representatives from the Florida League of Cities are expected to testify against Mayfield’s bill, which faces strong opposition from cities across the state.

Meanwhile, Joe McCann, a lobbyist hired by the Indian River County Commission and assisted by utility activist, Glenn Heran, is working hard in Tallahassee to push through all three pieces of utility legislation proposed by Mayfield.  Though the County has committed to spend up to $75,000 on McCann’s lobbying efforts to secure passage of Mayfield’s bills, sources close to the discussions are skeptical legislative efforts to force a breakup of Vero Beach’s utilities will be successful.

  1. There is no way I’ll ever vote again for a person who pits me (City resident) against myself (IRC resident). This is ridiculous!

  2. If a movie is ever made about the long saga of the sale of the City of Vero Beach utility, there will have to be a scene showing our “leaders” and “civic activists” standing on the Alma Lee Loy bridge and thowing huge baskets of raxpayer money into the river.

  3. Thank you Indian River County for spending my tax money to make my life miserable. I know what an uninformed voter is … what do you call an uninformed legislator? Thank you County Commissioners for attempting to force a sale which will save me about $25 per month in electricity costs and up my city property tax by many times that amount.
