The School District of Indian River County is pleased to announce the opening of enrollment for Florida’s FREE Summer Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) Program. The Summer Voluntary Pre-K program is a high quality and developmentally appropriate 300 hour instructional program with certified teachers.
The Summer Voluntary Pre-K program begins June 16, 2014, and continues through July 31, 2014. Available student hours begin at 7:40 a.m. and continue through 5:20 p.m.
Pending enrollment, the Summer Voluntary Pre-K program will be offered at Rosewood Magnet School located at 3850 – 16th Street, Vero Beach, 32960 and Liberty Magnet School located at 6850 – 81st Street, Vero Beach, 32967.
The Summer Voluntary Pre-K program promotes readiness for school success and a positive transition to Kindergarten. This program is free of charge for children who are, or will be, 5 years old on or before September 1, 2014, and who will be entering Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. However, the child may not have participated in the Voluntary Pre-K school year program during the 2013 – 2014 school year.
To enroll a child, parents register with the School District of Indian River County Pre-K Staff and Early Learning Coalition Staff who will be available as follows:
- Tuesday, April 8, 2014, from 8:00 a.m. – Noon at the School District of Indian River County Office of Student Assignment located at 1426 – 18th Street, Vero Beach 32960
- Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 8:00 a.m. – Noon at the School District of Indian River County Office of Student Assignment located at 1426 – 18th Street, Vero Beach 32960
- Friday, April 11, 2014 from Noon – 2:00 p.m. at Fellsmere Elementary located at 50 N. Cypress Street, Fellsmere 32948
Registration for the School District of Indian River County’s Summer Voluntary Pre-K program will remain open and by appointment only after these dates and through July.
Families can enroll with the School District of Indian River County Pre-K Program after the registration dates offered by scheduling an appointment with school district personnel by calling 564-4169.
Documentation for enrollment:
- Proof of the child’s age (Required , ex: original birth certificate)
- Proof of the family’s residency (Required, ex: a bill for a service that you receive in your name at your current address)
- Child’s Social Security card (Optional)
- Certificate of Eligibility (Required, this is obtained from the Early Learning Coalition who will be on site at the sign-up dates. After the sign-up dates, appointments are scheduled with the Early Learning Coalition by calling 1-877-220-1223. Their office is located at 2459 – 14th Ave., Vero Beach.
NOTE: The child will be required to have a current (given within one year of the June 16, 2014 program start date) physical and immunization record on the Florida forms, which must be received at the school site prior to the child’s participation in the Summer VPK program. A child will not be allowed to attend until these records are complete and received on site.

I’m curious as to what kind of activities and learning the little ones will experience. It sounds like a terrific way to prepare them for kindergarten. Actually, I’ve always wondered what kindergarten is all about, since it was not part of public school where I grew up.
