In a surprise announcement yesterday, Democratic congressional candidate, Corry Westbrook, informed her supporters that, “due to a paperwork error,”  she had failed to qualify to be on the ballot in the Florida 18th Congressional District primary election to be held Aug. 26.

“This is devastating news. Devastating to me, my family, friends, volunteers and supporters. I am sincerely sorry for this error. That has to be the understatement of the year but the only words I can manage at this time,” Westbrook wrote.

Westbrook was to face fellow Democrat Gabriel Rothblatt, Palm Bay, in the August primary.  The 18th Congressional District, which includes Brevard and much of Indian River Counties, is currently served by Republican Bill Posey, who is seeking a fourth term.

This story will be updated.

  1. The pity here is not the “paperwork error” but the chain of events that led up to this blatant embarrassment for both Westbrook and the local Democratic Party. They had ample time to stop this deception by not running this candidate, but they chose to disregard prior warnings that the candidate did in fact not qualify for this race. Shame on those who turned a “deaf ear” when a member of their own party came forward and challenged the eligibility of this candidate early on! Westbrook now steps up and graciously takes the “hit” with a paperwork error. The secret is out and only one person had it right. The blame for this rouse falls squarely on the shoulders of Westbrook and all the decision makers who backed her!

  2. Larry, This story as originally posted indicated that it will be updated. I am traveling this week, but do intend to follow up on this to learn more about the so-called “paperwork” error. Your comment point to the very facts I will be following up on when I return. One of Westbrook’s fellow Democrats was persistently, even relentlessly critical for the very issue to which you have pointed.

  3. The truth of this matter happens to be a single page oath that was not filled out and presented before 12 pm last Fri. This has nothing to do with her residency as claimed by the detractors ! Westbrook to her credit admits her mistake and takes full responsibility .
