ISHAM JAMES ‘JIMMY” ANDERSON, formerly of Vero Beach, FL, died on May 13, 2014, at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA. Mr. Anderson, age 93, was born in Sebastian, FL on September 14, 1920. After attending elementary and middle schools in Sebastian and Fellsmere, FL, he graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1938. He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Chief Pharmacist Mate aboard the USS Amycus in WWII, serving tours in the South Pacific, Australia, and New Guinea.
Following his discharge from the Navy, he opened a grocery store in Sebastian and served a two-year term on the Sebastian City Council. Following training at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA, Mr. Anderson worked as an x-ray technician at Indian River Memorial Hospital where he later served 14 years as hospital administrator. During this time he also served a one-year term as President of the Florida Hospital Association. After several years of managing a medical supply business in Orlando, he retired to Sebastian where he worked as a residential realtor for Fisher Real Estate. He was a past Commander of American Legion Post 189 and a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10210. He was the first volunteer president of the Sebastian Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 70 years, Inez, formerly of Vero Beach now living in Thomasville, GA; daughter Connie (Bill) Williams of Robbinsville, NC; son Jerry (Carol) Anderson of Thomasville, GA; son Bucky (Tina) Anderson of Port St. Lucie, FL; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and two nieces. Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Thomasville, GA on May 20, 2014.
