Canoeing excursions ideal for family summer fun

Educational, full of discovery, and relaxing is how participants describe their canoe excursions on the Indian River Lagoon with the Environmental Learning Center (ELC). These excursions are led by experienced guides who explore “off the beaten path” canoe trails. In addition to seeing wonderful scenery, including multiple bird species, fish rising from the water, and various kinds of native vegetation, dolphins and manatees may be seen in their natural habitat. A canoe excursion is one of the best ways to explore this environment in a close-up way.

These excursions are scheduled the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month through August. They are early morning trips, from 8:00 to 10:30 am, so that participants can enjoy cool summer breezes. The guides will explain ways that the participants can positively impact the ecology of the Lagoon. The fee, including canoe rental and gear, is $15 per adult and $7 per child ($3 less for ELC Members and their children). Reservations and information inquiries may be made by calling the ELC at (772) 589-5050 ext. 101.

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western end of the Wabasso Bridge. Its campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop, and a visitor center. ELC membership benefits, a list of its many field excursions, EcoVentures, including nature walks, and other boating adventures available during the year can be found at www.DiscoverELC.org. Admission is $5 per person, children 12 and under are free, and ELC members receive free admission year-around. The first Saturday of each month is free to all.
