WILLIAM BAYSURA passed away peacefully on Monday morning, July 14, 2014. William was a Combat Wounded Purple Heart recipient and veteran of the Korean War and accomplished golfer from the Pittsburgh PA area. William was a founding member of Seven Oaks C.C. in Beaver Falls, PA. Among his many titles, his back to back City of Pittsburgh Golf Championships 1952-1953 were his favorite. It was played on Schenley Park Golf course where he caddied as a boy.

He is survived by his wife Jacqueline of Vero Beach, children William Jr. (Kelly) of Vero Beach, Jacqueline Runk (Tom) of Wall, NJ, grandchildren William III “Liam” and Ava Baysura of Vero Beach, Brandon and Jordan Baysura of Wall.

CHARLES P. “CHUCK” KERSEY, 62, died July 14, 2014 at his residence in Vero Beach. 

He was born in Vero Beach and was a lifetime resident. Chuck worked for Murphy Construction as a bridge builder. 

Survivors include his wife, Trude of Vero Beach, Daughter Taryn Thimmer of Sebastian, brothers Robert Kersey of Vero Beach and Rudolph Kersey, Jr. of West Palm Beach, niece Deidre Bradford of Fort Pierce, nephew Allen Cooler of Vero Beach and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his brother Pat and sisters Beverly, Connie and Sandra. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Rifle Association, NRA PROCESSING CENTER, P. O. BOX 420648, PALM COAST, FL 32142-0648 in memory of Charles P. Kersey.

MARVIN G. MESSEX – The family and friends of Marvin G. Messex mourn his death. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He died in Vero Beach, Florida on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from his long struggle with cancer.

Marvin was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 8, 1933. He moved, as a young man, to California where he received his Bachelor degree from California State University, San Francisco and a Master of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley. In his long career working for the Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health, he made many contributions in the fields of both mental and public health. He worked to improve the lives of those who were suffering from mental health disorders while incarcerated.

Throughout his life Marvin enjoyed many sports, including tennis, racquetball, boules and was a croquet enthusiast. During his years at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida, he played in many competitions. He won his tenth singles croquet championship at age 80! He spent summers with his wife, Jean, at her family’s place “Larchwood” in Blue Hill, Maine, where they were members of the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club and the Blue Hill Country Club, where he served as president from 1992-1995. In Maine, Marvin was often seen fishing in Blue Hill Bay and was famous for his smoked mackerel.

Marvin is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Jean (Palmer); his older brother Monte Messex (Shan); his two sons from a previous marriage: Montgomery Messex (Kim) their children Bela and Max; Michael Messex (Tina) their children Jacob, Luella and Megan; Jean’s six children from her previous marriage: Hanna Henderson (Kris) their children Morgan, Whitney and Emma Claire; Lindsay McCrum; Elizabeth McCrum; Arlington Bliss (Bo) McCrum III (Barbara) their children Kathryn, Hanna and Matthew; Kate Boleyn; and William Palmer McCrum and his son Jacob. Marvin’s first two marriages ended in divorce.

Marvin’s wife and family would like to express their deep appreciation to the caring doctors and nurses who helped Marvin in his 17 year “Journey Through Cancer”. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Indian River Memorial Hospital or the Visiting Nurses Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida or the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill, Maine. ALFRED L. ROTHFUSS, (83) born in Marion, Ohio, a long term resident of Warwick, Rhode Island and presently a resident of Vero Beach, Florida died tragically and unexpectedly on July 12, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Lou Rothfuss, his beloved children Lori Hoffman of Vero beach, Alan Rothfuss of Warwick Rhode Island, Mark Rothfuss of Brockton Massachusetts, Melissa Rothfuss of Sebastian Florida; his grandchildren, Chelsea Monte, Kyle Rothfuss, Peter Hoffman and Emily Rothfuss; his brother David Rothfuss of Coventry, Rhode Island and his beloved dog Maxx. 

An active boater and lover of the water, he spent many years with his wife and kids summering on Johnsons’ Pond in Coventry, Rhode Island and boating on Narragansett Bay. He loved boating, fishing and spear fishing and was called by his family the “Tautog” Hunter. A consummate family man, he and his family annually camped around the country in true “Brady Bunch” style. He was a devoted church member of Asbury United Methodist Church of Warwick, Rhode Island. 
A Comptroller at Kenney Manufacturing in Warwick Rhode Island for 38 years, he retired and RV’ed with his wife for many years exploring the country and travelling abroad before finally retiring in Vero Beach. He was a volunteer of the Indian River North County Library as Treasurer for the Friends of the Library. He was an active member of Sebastian United Methodist Church and a familiar friendly smile when he volunteered at the Church Thrift store. 

A kind compassionate soul and a gentle spirit, he was loved by all who met him. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Sebastian United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or the local chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving.

JULIA BECKER SCHAEFER, 89, died July 12, 2014 at Indian River Estates Medical Center in Vero Beach. Julia was born in Lynch, Kentucky to the late Frank William Becker and Emma Sedges Becker. She graduated from Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield, NJ and had worked as a bookkeeper for Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County. She first moved to Vero Beach nearly 30 years ago from Berkeley Heights, NJ. She lived in several locations in this area before moving to Newberry, FL. Julia eventually returned to Vero to live at Indian River Estates in 2004.

Survivors include her sister Ruthann B. Hodgson, and her husband Claude, of Newberry, FL; a brother Howard C. Becker, husband of the late Gertrude Becker, of Deltona, FL; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William Schaefer, Sr., and sons William Schaefer, Jr. and Bruce Schaefer.

ROBERT “JAKE” DALE STUMBERG, 84, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Palm Garden of Vero Beach. Jake was born in Grundy Center, Iowa and moved to Vero Beach 51 years ago from Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the US Air Force. Jake had been a receiving engineer for Piper Aircraft in Vero before his retirement. A good family man, Jake enjoyed taking his wife fishing so she could catch dinner. He was the consummate worker and spent any extra time with family activities. Jake enjoyed watering his plants, real or artificial.

Survivors include his son Steven R. Stumberg (Phyllis) of Orlando; grandchildren Christopher, Matthew, Destine, Daisy and Alizah; and extended family in Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jean Stumberg and a son Randy Stumberg.

The family will receive friends 4-7 PM, Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach. A graveside service with military honors will begin at 1 PM, Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce.

 

PIETER C. VAN DALEN, 89, of Vero Beach, FL and Lima, Peru, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. Pieter was born in Holland to Wilhemus and Jacoba Van Dalen. he was a mechanical engineer for Volvo until his retirement. He was a Master Mason and a Shriner. He also served in the military during WW II.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Teresa; a daughter, Dolly Van Dalen (Don McGuigan); a son, Pieter Van Dalen (Korri); 2 grandchildren, Alyssa and Alex and six brother’s and sisters.
