Hight temps threaten cooling canals at Turkey Point

Editor’s Note: Largely as a result of problems at its Crystal River nuclear power plant, Duke Energy’s rates are now well above Florida Power & Light at $122.16 per KWH, compared to 99.17 for FPL.  Should the Indian River Shores Town Council successful sue to become customers of FPL, the utility giant better hope it never has an expensive repair issue at one of its nuclear power plants.  Believing they have an inalienable right to the lowest electric rates in the state, the Indian River Shores Town Council members may turn around and sue FPL.

  1. Part of the problem is that there are too many climate change deniers. The issue of rising water temperatures was never a factor when the government set the operating standards for nuclear power plants. As a result, the problem of rising costs is going to become a matter of business as usual.

The creation of a utility Commission as recently proposed by Council member Jay Kramer will also not be able to control the costs once the government sets temperature standards.

Also, there is no such thing as an inexperience repair problem at any facility that generates electricity.
