Update: Elections Commission to hold hearing Oct. 29 on complaint against Wilson

Editor’s note: The following story was first published Aug. 13, 2014.

Wilson’s campaign sign appears not to be in compliance with Florida election law

A campaign sign mounted in the back window of Wilson's vehicle failed to include the require word "For" between his name and the office he is seeking. The inclusion of "For" is required by Florida campaign low to prevent challengers, such as Wilson, from creating the false impression they are incumbents.

Indian River County Supervisor of Elections, Leslie Swan, confirmed today city council candidate Charlie Wilson’s campaign sign does not comply with Florida election law.  By not including the word “for” between his name and the office he is seeking, Wilson is implying incumbency.

Florida Statute.  106.143 Political advertisements circulated prior to election; requirements.— (6) No political advertisement of a candidate who is not an incumbent of the office for which the candidate is running shall use the word “re-elect.” Additionally, such advertisement must include the word “for” between the candidate’s name and the office for which the candidate is running, in order that incumbency is not implied. This subsection does not apply to bumper stickers or items designed to be worn by a person.

In a comment posted on Inside Vero’s Facebook page, Phil Blank of Signs By Tomorrow wrote, “For the record, SBT was not responsible for the error.  We printed the graphic we were sent.”

According to the latest campaign finance report Wilson filed with the City Clerk’s Office, the sign, mounded on the back window of his vehicle, with a St. Lucie County license plate, appears to be his only major campaign expense to date.

Contributions through 7/31/14:

Charlie Wilson – $100

Gerry Weick, Indian River Shores Town Councilman – $100

Lean Facto, north county resident – $100

Toddy Offutt – $50

Expenditures through 7/31/14:

Supervisor of Elections, voter list – $15

Signs by Tomorrow – $170.74

  1. I have only one question being new to Vero Beach and this being my first election to vote, why the mad obsession with this Wilson man? Can we not give information on the other candidates? It’s obvious who you’re not voting for but some of us would like reliable facts on other candidates, rather than the personal campaign to embarrass this guy.

  2. Elizabeth,

We have published a number of stories on candidate Randy Old. I personally set a date with Brian Curley to conduct and interview just days before he withdrew from the race. The only other two declared candidates are Brian Heady and Charlie Wilson. Wilson is the only one of the candidates currently making news.

  3. Did Pilar Turner officially declare herself as a candidate? By officially, did she submit the proper paperwork with the COVB?

  4. Simply put Charlie Wilson’s past history, his removal from office by a judge , his antics at meetings, his moving in and out of the city at regular intervals , his personal verbal attacks on honorable people have left a scarred city.

  5. It’s almost as though he does it purposely – fudging on residency, leaving a word out of his sign, ranting at meetings – all to get attention. Then it may appear he’s being picked on – which is far from the truth. Had he proved himself honorable, trustworthy, and upright in all business dealings, no one would give him a second look. Oh….
