NEWS RELEASE
An event called Lines in the Lagoon is a junior, tri-county fishing tournament. It is designed to raise awareness about the poor health of our Indian River Lagoon. Based out of Vero Beach, FL, it is run by a group of teenage boys who are passionate about the safety of our lagoon. They are Bryce Hauser, Steven Croom, Michael Villafuerte, Quinn Hiaasen, Tommy Hammond, Ritter Marchant and Barrette Rhymes.
The tournament will be held in three counties on October 18, 2014. These three counties are: Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River. The tournament can be fished out of a boat, kayak, and or any other water craft. It can also be fished off of land (examples: seawalls, docks, etc.).
At the end of tournament, prizes will be awarded at a fun casual dinner (dress: flip-flops and shorts) catered by Chipotle Mexican Grill. The dinner will be held at the A.E. Backus Museum in Veterans’ Memorial Park in Fort Pierce. Games and activities for the whole family will be included to make for a great event for all ages regardless of whether or not someone participated in the fishing tournament.
Dr. Edie Widder will be the featured speaker at the awards dinner.
The proceeds from the event will go to the Ocean Research & Conservation Association and the Everglades Foundation. ORCA is monitoring and mapping pollution, which is the best ways for us to understand all of the attacks on our diverse water habitats so we can find the right solution for each environmental challenge.
The Everglades Foundation is the only science-based nonprofit dedicated to leading efforts to restore one of the world’s greatest natural ecosystems–America’s Everglades.
Sponsors include Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers/TCPALM, TD Bank, Sunrise Ford, Croom Construction, Ankona Boats and Salt Marsh Skiffs, Jimmy Buffet, Quail Valley Charities, Inc., The Lemon Tree, Alex MacWilliam Realty, Linus Cadillac-Buick-GMC, Griffin and Camille Greene, Maverick Boat Company, Inc., Raymond A.
