Democratic Women to hear from gun reform advocate

NEWS RELASE

Gun violence and meaningful gun reform will be examined during a presentation by Susan Smith, president of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida, at the Sept. 13 meeting of the Democratic Women’s Club of Indian River County.

An outspoken proponent of comprehensive gun safety legislation, Smith will discuss principled approaches that respect the rights of responsible gun owners while initiating common sense policies such as closing the gun show loophole, strengthening background checks and limiting the size of ammunition clips.

In addition to her role with the Democratic Progressive Caucus, Smith is chair of the Campaign and Legislative Committees for the Hillsborough Democratic Party, a board member of Tiger Bay Club of Tampa, and the Training Resource Director of the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida.

She has been a full-time progressive activist for more than a decade, serving as an organizer for Democracy for America Tampa Bay, a member of the Advisory Board of Progress Florida, and a member of the Florida Democratic Party’s Legislative Liaison and Clubs and Caucuses committees.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee and a former teacher, Smith also volunteers with Awake the State, Planned Parenthood, and the parent-led education reform community in Florida.

Saturday’s luncheon meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Club at Pointe West, 7500 14th Lane in Vero Beach. Cost is $20 and reservations are required; email DemLunch@aol.com.
