Deputies seek person of interest in suspicious package incident

NEWS RELEASE

On Sunday afternoon, a concerned citizen called the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Dispatch to say that a person was observed placing two packages on the railroad tracks on Roseland Road. Responding deputies found two cylindrical shaped packages that appears to be secured with a wire or string like material. Out of an abundance of caution, deputies immediately secured the area and closed the railroad tracks to through traffic, both trains and vehicles.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Disposal Unit responded and determined that the packages were not dangerous. Upon opening the packages, deputies discovered cow tongues with nails and pins stuck in them. Deputies have since learned of at least one similar incident in another jurisdiction that link the practice to Santeria, a religion that combines Christianity with West African beliefs.

Sheriff Deryl Loar stated, “While we are always on alert for suspicious activities, in the weeks leading up to the thirteenth anniversary of 9/11 we are even more cautious. I have instructed our deputies to take all precautions necessary to ensure the safety of the residents of Indian River County. Fortunately, this incident appears to be unrelated to terrorism, but we still want to speak to whoever placed these packages.”
