School Health Advisory Committee Organizes for 2014-2015

NEWS RELEASE

Every Florida School District is required to establish and maintain a School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC). The membership must include representatives from the areas of school health recommended by the Center for Disease Control. These community leaders serve as problem-solvers and advisors to the school district on health related matters. This community knowledge, passion and leadership can have a positive impact on the health and academic success of youth.

For the 2014-15 School Year, the SHAC will be comprised of the following:

  • Community Health Services – Vicki Soule, CEO Treasure Coast Community Health
  • Family and Community Involvement – Elizabeth Thomason, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Clubs of IRC
  • Guidance, Psychological and Social Services – Janet Santiago, Counselor, Legacy Behavioral Health
  • Health Education & Obesity – Miranda Hawker, Administrator, Department of Health
  • Healthy School Environment – Cheryl Dunn, Director Environmental Health, Department of Health
  • Nutrition Services – Betsy Root, Dietician
  • Parent Involvement – Applications Encouraged
  • Physical Activity/Education – Rob Slezak, Director of Recreation for City of Vero Beach
  • School Health Services – Georgann Gregora, IRSD School Health Coordinator
  • Staff Wellness – Leslie Spurlock, The Quit Doctor, Tobacco Free Partnership of Indian River County

SHAC meetings are open to interested citizens. Parents of school-aged children are encouraged to attend. The SHAC is currently seeking an active parent to fill the committee position for Parent Involvement. Meetings are held at the United Way Office located 1836 14th Avenue, Vero Beach in the 2nd floor Community Room at 12:00 Noon for one hour.
