Vero Beach: An enterprising city

While charging less than contract haulers charge county residents, Vero Beach is able to operate a solid waste utility offering exceptional twice-weekly pickup up. Vero Beach operates five enterprises, including the solid waste utility. InsideVero will begin a series in October looking at each of the enterprise funds operated by the City of Vero Beach.

  1. It is my hope that Gordon Butler in his series will get into depth about some history and why the City of Vero Beach is responsible for the marina. Operation of such a luxury item does not seem to be a part of the core mission of the city’s resonsibilities. I personally feel that it is like the Department of Defense having military bands. It is a nice thing to have but it has no relationship whatever to the services that the city is obligated to provide its residents.

  2. Our solid waste management does an outstanding job all the time. I find them to be most helpful and courteous on every occasion that I spoke to them. A fine group of workers who do an outstanding job .Please do not let the county poach them from us. Keep the service local and close to us.

  3. We know some of the hard-working guys by name, and wave when we see them. Much appreciate them all. Some of our acquaintances first came to Vero Beach on their boats and ultimately ended up staying. I suspect whoever was in charge of the marina when they arrived, gave a pretty good indication of the kind of hospitality they’d receive in this town. Glad they chose to put down roots here. Looking forward to this series.

  4. Does the VB Power Plant income fund or support these other departments? Seems easy to check the budget detail for a line transfer during the budget year. Dale Justice

  5. The marina makes a profit, why can’t the city have these enterprises. Why must it always be about paying more property taxes?

  6. the marina predates a lot of snowbirds. mark knows this. it would make sense to have it since well boaters live on the mainland side and barrier island and some do use them to go up and down the river. that was the way vero beach had to travel across the lagoon before the bridge we call the barber bridge. I suggest pat visit the library or contact ruth standbridge. the man henry Gifford lived on the barrier island and used a boat to traverse the lagoon, in the late 1890’s.the reason the dod has army band is for the purpose of traditions and they also did funerals and well we solders do march to songs. some songs are used by the band only.
