“In what way do you feel your political party affiliation makes you a better official?,” Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers asked the candidates in the nonpartisan race for Vero Beach City Council.
Jay Kramer, Randy Old, Jack Shupe and Pilar Turner knew better than to take the bait. All gave their party affiliation as “nonpartisan.”
Brian Heady, Harry Howle and Charlie Wilson identified themselves as Republicans. Wilson went further, referring to his friendships within the Republican Party.
Because published answers to questions posed by the press do not constitute political advertising, Heady, Howle and Wilson may not have yet violated Florida’s election law prohibiting reference to party affiliation in nonpartisan elections. If they reference their party affiliation in any paid advertising, including campaign websites, that will be another matter.
Florida Statute 106.143, (3) – “A candidate for nonpartisan office is prohibited from campaigning based on party affiliation.”
