After hearing 10 hours of citizen input, in which 20 opponents of the proposed Oslo Road boat ramp project expressed concerns it will endanger vital seagrass beds, the Indian River County Commission, by a vote of 3-2, delayed final approval on the plan until later this month.
More than 100 people packed the Commission chambers to protest the Commission’s determination to go forward with a $1 million project many believe will further endanger the health of the Indian River Lagoon.
Commissioner Bob Solari proposed putting the project off three to five years. Commissioner Tim Zorc amended Solari’s motion to delay a final vote to either the Commission’s Oct. 21 meeting, or a special meeting to be held before the end of October. Commissioner Joe Flescher joined Zorc and Solari in approving a delay in the Commission’s final decision.
Zorc and Flescher both said they want to visit the boat ramp site with scientists to better understand their concerns.
Commission Chairman Peter O’Bryan and Commissioner Wesley Davis, unswayed by 10 hours of impassioned calls to postpone or kill the project, opposed delaying the final vote.
