According to campaign finance reports filed yesterday with the City Clerk’s Office, city council candidate, Randy Old, has raised almost as much in contributions as the remaining six candidates combined. Harry Howle, III, and Pilar Turner are second and third in campaign fundraising, each receiving more than half their contributions from outside the city.

Though Toby Hill, along with others, hosted an Oct. 2 fundraiser Howle and Turner, neither candidate listed as in-kind contributions the cost of the event.  According to Florida election law, (Florida Statutes Section 106.055), the cost to the host for holding the event should have been reported as a contribution on Howle’s and Turner’s campaign finance reports. (See: Newcomer, Howle, teaming up with incumbent, Turner)

To date, Old has spent $25,232 of $34,435 raised, leaving him with a campaign war chest of $9,203.  Approximately $3,000, or 10 percent, of Old’s contributions came from outside the city.

Howle raised $15,510. Though he has mailed at least one post card, and his signs are sprouting up around town like mushrooms, Howle reported total campaign expenses of just $343. Of Howle’s total contributions, $8,325, or 54 percent, came from contributors outside the city, most from the north and south barrier island.

Of the $10,200 Turner raised to date, she spent $4,814.  Fifty-two percent of Turner’s campaign contributions reported since Sept. 1, have come from out-of-city contributors, including $100 from Indian River Shores Town Councilman, Gerry Weick. Weick also contributed to Charlie Wilson’s campaign. (Indian River Shores is suing the City of Vero Beach.) Like Howle, Turner raised most of her out-of-city money from the north and south barrier island.

Vice Mayor Jay Kramer raised $7,260 to date and has spent $2,573. Kramer’s outside contributions totaled $850, or 12 percent.

Wilson made a personal loan to his campaign of $1,000 and paid his company, Media Arts Group, $728.73.  His contributions, including the personal loan, total $4,100.  To date, Wilson has spent $3,368. Wilson raised $2,000 or 71 percent of his campaign cash from out-of-city contributors.

Jack Shupe raised $2,424 and spent to date $1,271. Shupe raised 17 percent of his campaign contributions outside the city.

Again this year, Brian Heady is not accepting campaign contributions.

  1. As we learned in the Watergate era, the voter should always follow the money. Then there must be answers given by the candidates as to why there is outside money flowing into a local election. The voters need to know if there is some quid pro quo in accepting donations from outside the city limits.

  2. Just what we need lots of campaign cash from outside sources. Now we know why Pilar Turner is so obsessed with supporting causes that run counter to city needs. The same can be said about Howle’s cash. Why do so many outsiders want him elected? Why does he want to sell the cemetery? Why does he want to sell the profitable Water& Sewer system? I will take a wild guess that lots of his cash comes from real estate developers. What promises has he made, and to whom? Do you get the overall picture. Build more ,build up. I say KEEP VERO ,VERO.

  3. Turners’ acceptance of a contribution from IRShores Town Councilman Gerry Weick should send a strong message to the voters of Vero Beach…Turner is “not” representing the City of Vero Beach. Contributions from within the city is hard for Turner, Howle, and Wilson to get. No one trusts them so why would they give to their campaigns? I am sure there is FPL money sprinkled somewhere in those campaign contributions.

  4. Again Wilson is paying himself, and to a company that does not have the proper licenses.
