NEWS RELEASE
Now in its 57th season, the Vero Beach Theatre Guild has three remaining shows that are a perfect fit for Guild audiences. The Michael Parker American farce, “Whose Wives are they Anyway”, will be featured January 15-25. The powerful musical “Gypsy”, based on the memoirs of burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee, will take the stage March 12-29 and the classic comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You” will close the season May 14-24.
In January’s Michael Parker farce, Whose Wives Are They Anyway?, executives John and David send their wives on a shopping spree in New York so they can go play golf. At the club they run into the company’s new CEO, who informs them that “no one who goes for a golfing weekend without his wife would ever work for her” and she insists on meeting their wives that evening. Panicked, they must produce suitable substitutes. John persuades Tina, the hotel’s sexy receptionist, to play his wife but the only one who can pretend to be David’s wife is… JOHN! And the real wives show up to surprise their husbands. SURPRISE!
Gypsy, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurent, is the musical story of the young 1920’s burlesque queen, Gypsy Rose Lee, and her ultimate stage mother, “Mama Rose”. Gypsy has been called “the greatest American musical” by Ben Brantley and others. Winner of numerous Tony Awards, its’ score features “Let Me Entertain You”, “You Gotta Get a Gimmick”, “Together”, “Small World” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”.
You Can’t Take It With You is the timeless comedy masterpiece created by George Kaufman and Moss Hart, the masters of comedy in the 1930’s. It won a Pulitzer Prize (play) and the Academy Award for best film. When Alice of the eccentric Sycamore family becomes engaged to Tony Kirby, son of a wealthy, ruthless banker, the two families clash. The ensuing comedy builds when an IRS agent visits Grandpa, who hasn’t paid taxes in twenty-four years and the chaos peaks when federal agents raid the Sycamore household.
