Bernie Sanders is in his natural state – of agitation.
It’s just 9 a.m., but the socialist senator, contemplating a presidential run as a Democrat or as a populist independent, is red in the face and his white hair askew. In a conference room at The Washington Post, he’s raising his voice, thumping his index finger on the table and gesturing so wildly that his hand comes within inches of political reporter Karen Tumulty’s face. The editor of another Indian River County publication calls me “Vero Beach’s only liberal.” It is meant as an insult but it is a badge of honor for me. I come from the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democrat Party and would vote for him if he were the candidate which is highly unlikely.
I have also had first hand experience in how the government operates with a socialist government. On vacation I tripped on a cobble-stoned street in Stockholm. I awoke the next morning in a hospital worried about how I would pay for my medical care. On discharge I was told that a bill had already been sent to my home. It was with trepidation a week later that I opened the biill and found that I owed $6.25 for my overnight stay in a private room and for a battery of tests.
It is my view that government exists to do that which the individual is not able to do alone. This is a concept that the smaller government crowd does not support until they have a personal need for government services.
