NEIL BOST GLENN, 83, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on February 14, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 8, 1931 in Burlington, North Carolina, Neil was the son of Ross William Glenn and Alice Hawn Glenn. He received a B.S.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953. Upon graduation, he joined the Atlanta office of the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., now known as KPMG. He was transferred to the firm’s Greensboro, North Carolina office later that year. Neil was the president of the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce, known as the Jaycees, from 1962 to 1963. While president, he was involved in the Jaycees’ annual sponsorship of the Greater Greensboro Open, now known as the Wyndham Championship, a regular tournament on the P.G.A. tour. In recognition of his devotion to the Jaycees, Neil was named a Life Member of the Greensboro Jaycees and a member of the Green Coat Club, now known as the Founders Club.
In 1963, Neil moved to New Jersey and was admitted to the Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. partnership. He was the partner-in-charge of the firm’s Newark office tax practice from 1963 to 1970 and served as the office’s managing partner from 1970 to 1976. In 1976, Neil was transferred to the firm’s New York City Executive Office to become Vice Chairman – Tax. He served in this position until his retirement from the firm in 1987. Under his leadership, the firm’s tax practice experienced an unprecedented period of growth. In the early 1980s, Neil recognized the potential impact of computer technology on the accounting profession. As a result of his vision, devotion and perseverance, the personal computer was introduced in the firm’s tax practice in 1982, and with it the firm’s first standardized electronic mail system was implemented.
While in New York, Neil also chaired the firm’s strategic planning committee that developed and implemented a firm-wide strategic plan and strategic management process that led to the worldwide merger of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. and Klynveld Main Goerdeler, which at the time was the largest accounting firm merger in history. In addition, he served as the chairman of the firm’s tax practice committee and its professional practice review committee – tax, and he served on the board of directors and operating committee. Neil supported his alma mater throughout his life by establishing an endowment for the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and by supporting the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School as a member of the 1919 Society. Neil served in various roles in numerous civic and charitable organizations in North Carolina, New Jersey, New York and Florida. He was also a member of many social and business clubs and organizations, including The Economic Club of New York.
Neil is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Virginia Glenn, whom he met at Carolina Beach, North Carolina in the summer of 1950. JOHN EDWARD KELLY: After a long and hard-fought battle with cancer, the love of my life John-Edward Kelly has departed this world. Kelly was born in California and spent most of his adult life in Europe. His life as a performing musician brought him to many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals, where he performed as soloist with many of the world’s greatest orchestras. He gave the world-premières of over 200 new works written for him by leading composers from around the world; performed for kings and queens; and was praised in the international press as “the uncrowned king of his instrument”. His work is documented in 36 commercial recordings. For over a decade John-Edward Kelly was an internationally respected professor of music, first at the Robert Schumann Academy of Music in Düsseldorf, and then at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo. He guest-lectured at many of the world’s leading music academies, including Vienna’s University of Music, New York’s Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, King’s College in London, the Musikhochschulen of Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart and the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. In 1999 he was unanimously elected a member of the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Music. One of Kelly’s crowning professional achievements was his 2005 founding of the extraordinary Arcos Orchestra of New York, which by 2012 was already celebrated by one of the world’s leading music critics as “undoubtedly one of the best chamber orchestras in the world”. Kelly’s programming philosophy for the Arcos Orchestra was the same he had used his entire performing career: wonderful new music which hasn’t had a fair chance and great older music that has fallen by the wayside of history. He was an avid champion of the music by the Dutchman Tristan Keuris (1946-1996) and the Swede Anders Eliasson (1947-2013), and enjoyed friendships with such renowned composers as Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) and Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), whose last work begun was a concerto for John-Edward Kelly.
The son of an Air Force pilot and JAG officer (military attorney), Kelly turned down an appointment to the Air Force Academy to pursue his love of music, but he remained an aviation enthusiast his entire life as a pilot and flight instructor. He was proud of having been a Son of the American Revolution on both sides of his family and that a paternal forefather had served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Despite his rich list of professional accomplishments, John-Edward Kelly took his greatest delight in his family. He is survived by his wife, Kristin Kelly, and their four young children aged 5 months to 9 years of age. He was a completely devoted husband and father who will be sorely missed. Kelly died on February 12, 2015 in Vero Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers you may make a contribution to “The Kelly Children Donation Account” for future education, in care of Chase Bank (Leidys C. Lorenzo, 772 569 3356). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:00 PM, Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach, Florida. Strunk Funeral Homes (2/18/15)
