Who invited Phil Robertson to speak in Vero Beach?

And, who is behind the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast?

Editor’s note: One commenter, who identified herself as being associated with the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast, indicated in a comment posted to InsideVero.com and on Facebook that the cost of the event was $60 per person, or $150,000 total. Proceeds from ticket sales, at $30 per person, , were something under $75,000. No one from the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast organization, which is closely associated with John Bona’s “The Story of Liberty” radio program, has yet to reveal how much Robertson was paid to serve as the event’s keynote speaker. The commenter, whose name is being withheld at her request, claims to have received “horrible threats” against her family from “atheists.”   Robertson’s defenders claim the “liberal” media is taking his comments out of context and blowing the story out of proportion. One not-so-liberal media, FOX News, reported the story two days ago. FOX News: ‘Duck Dynasty’ star Phil Robertson under fire for graphic anti-atheist speech

Controversial statements made by television star Phil Robertson at the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast, and continued support for him by event organizers, raise questions about exactly who is behind the annual, $150,000 gathering in Riverside Park.

Is the event truly ecumenical, as many believe? Or, is the group, lead by local businessman John Bona, who produces “The Story of Liberty” radio program, really a band of radical, far right free market fundamentalists and Christian Reconstructionists intent on establishing a theocracy in America? Finally, how does the 501c3 group spend the more than $75,000 it raises from ticket sales?

InsideVero is currently seeking answers to these questions.

Following the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Bona said in a YouTube post, “They endorsed abortion, same-sex marriage and immorality. The very soul of America was cast down at their convention. Race and ethnicity overrode morals. More unborn children will die. Traditional marriage will be attacked and sin will be exalted. Islam will be promoted and Israel will not have America as a strong friend. Our military will become weak and the world will become a more dangerous place. These things will happen because America turned against God. As a consequence of mocking God, America will pay a terrible price.”

  1. “Finally, how does the 501c3 group spend the more than $50,000 it raises from ticket sales?”

Each plate costs $60+, so if you multiply that by $2,500, you get a cost of roughly $150,000. Perhaps the writer may want to consider remedial math class.

  2. On the issue of questioning the price/ costs and spending of the breakfast and expenses, bring it!. We only charge $30.00 per ticket. Each plate costs $60+, -so if you multiply that by $2,500, you get a cost of roughly $150,000. We would have been happy to inform you of this is you had asked. And, you did not ask obviously. Nice sensationalism.

  4. Jennifer, I will ask you now in this public forum. If the proceeds from ticket sales for the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast totaled $75,000, and the cost of the event was $150,000, can you tell us how the additional $75,000 in expense was covered. If the addition $75,000 was paid through donations, then can you disclose who underwrote this event? Finally, can you tell us if Mr. Robertson was paid to be the event’s keynote speaker, and if so, how much?

  5. The rest comes from sponsorship’s and donations, as has been public knowledge for 11 years. We give away a lot of tickets to those who can not afford them and to those whose groups help out others in need. We also donate a lot of food to local homeless charities, it is pretty wonderful how the community has come together over the past 11 years to do this. Its beautiful. I would love to invite you to come and join us next year. I firmly believe that all intolerance stems from not knowing and that if you came and saw the love there for eachother, your heart would be changed.

  6. Also, I kindly ask you to remove my name from above editors note, as I am getting threats from atheists. The comments section is fine, but above is not necessary, as you hardly gave me time to respond. Thank you for your consideration in my family’s safety.

  7. Jennifer, are the organizers of the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast willing to reveal their sponsors and donors and the amounts given by each? Also, are the organizers of the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast prepared to disclose how much Phil Robertson was paid to serve at the keynote speaker for this year’s event?

  8. Jennifer, you are clearly acting as the group’s spokesperson. You included the name of the organization under your name.

  9. Perhaps reading between the invisible lines discloses more than this 501 NO SEE. Nice job in getting out the truth even though 2500 saw Robertson and really just came to eat.
