COMMENTARY

As a legislator, about all State Representative Debbie Mayfield has been able to accomplish for her district is the renaming of a bridge and helping pass state legislation limiting the ability of cities and counties to regulate transient rentals.
For yet another year, Mayfield’s efforts to force her home city out of the power business have failed. As in previous years, her proposed legislation never made it out of committee. In fact, this year her proposed utility bills were not even heard by a committee.
Speaking at a meeting of the South Beach Property Association last year, Mayfield said, “You want to talk Common Core? We can talk Common Core all day.”
Talk. Talk. Talk.
Education reform is another subject about which Mayfield’s has made empty promises. For yet another year, Mayfield failed to push legislation suspending federal standards.
At least for Mayfield, one side benefit of all her bloviating is that she has endeared herself to the state’s investor owned electric utilities. Watch for her to land a lucrative job lobbying for utility giants when her term in the legislature end in 2016.

This editorial is so true. The experience of having Debbie Mayfield represent our community in the Florida legislature has failed to provide any benefit. This community will be protected only because of term limits. It is, therefore, essential that in the next election that we vote for someone who understands the need to represent the best interests of the people of this community.
