The long-running campaign to derail Florida Power & Light’s plans to add two new nuclear reactors at Turkey Point revved up Wednesday with mayors from three South Florida cities ticking off a long list of concerns ranging from inadequate evacuation zones to ugly new power lines and heightened risks from rising sea levels.

  1. As a Federal retiree with experience with the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, I have found it rather sad that so many people dismiss the role that the NRC plays in providing electiricity for consumer usage. The NRC has revised its requirements as a result of lessons learned from the Three Mile Island accident, Chernobyl and Fukuskima, In February 2012 the NRC gave permission to begin construction for new reactors to be built on the site of the Vogtle plant in Georgia. These new reactors will not go on-line until sometime after 2017.

If FP&L wants more nuclear power to be generated, they will have to be very patient because the NRC review process is likely to change as a result on long-term problems like safe nuclear waste disposal and the effects of climate change on nuclear power plant locations near areas of rising sea levels. There is also the not small issue of consumer opposition. The comments of the elected officials with jurisdiction in the area around Miami are only Act One in the long drama.
