High school class reunions are nothing unusual, but this one could break records. Instead of celebrating one class year at a time, the VBHS Golden Grads Reunion/Picnic is set to include everyone who attended Vero Beach High School at least 50 years ago. The event will be held on May 9 at the Indian River County Fairgrounds. Over 500 class members and guests have already signed up to attend. Hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and starting at 10:30 a.m. it will feature a traditional Florida barbecue of beef, pork, chicken, catfish, gator tail and more.
Event organizer, Buddy Provost (Class of 1963) says, “We had a reunion of three classes last year and it was so successful we decided to expand it to everyone who either attended or graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1965 or earlier. So far we even have a representative from the Class of 1932!”
The Reunion/Picnic committee, comprised of representatives from most class years, has been meeting regularly to plan the event. Committee members include Alice Gaskill (Class of ’65), Pat Luther (Class of ’63), Clara Lou Lockwood (Class of ‘61), Marilyn Cato Anderson (Class of ’59), Jack McAfee (Class of ’57), Elizabeth Graves Bass and Louis Schlitt (Class of ’54), Bob Brackett (Class of ’52) Alma Lee Loy (Class of ’47) and Jack Chesnutt (Class of ’44). Teachers and administration who worked at Vero Beach High School in 1965 or earlier are also invited.
Cost for the picnic is $15 per person including the barbecue. Each class year will have a sign-in table and name badges. Other events will be held that weekend for individual classes. Nice article, Milt, Thank you. As one of the committee members, I must emphasize that this is not actually going to much like a “class reunion.” We are calling it the Golden Grads Picnic. It’s a get-together for people who have graduated from Vero Beach High School, 50 years ago or more. And you might want people to know–especially the class of 1966–that we hope this will be an annual event as long as we can find a place to have it indoors. People who actually want to eat should probably contact one of the people you listed and pay ahead.
