NEWS RELEASE
At approximately 8:00 P.M. Monday, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call of shots being fired in the 15000 block of 93rd Street in Fellsmere. The caller stated that his vehicle had been struck by a bullet as rounds continued to strike near his house and property as he spoke with the 9-1-1 operator. With the assistance of Fellsmere Police Department, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office stopped a white Ford van leaving the area.
Inside of the van, deputies located SKS and M-4 style rifles and a 12 gauge shotgun. More than one hundred spent shell casings were located in the area. Deputies arrested Adrian Zamarripa (18) and Martin Corona (20) and charged them with culpable negligence and discharging a firearm in public. During the shooting incident, the caller’s vehicle, home, and two year old Holstein cow were struck by bullets. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office crime scene unit responded to recover evidence of the crime. A local veterinarian was contacted and is being consulted to determine if the cow will live or have to be disposed of.
Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar stated, “The reckless shooting by Zamarripa and Corona is completely inexcusable. We encourage gun safety at all times, asking that anyone who intends to discharge a weapon be sure that they are in a safe place and are shooting in a safe direction.” Both men stated that they did not know the residence was behind the area that they were shooting into.
