Florida Supreme Court: Early House adjournment unconstitutional

Editor’s note: Earlier this past week, Indian River County’s Florida House Rep. Debbie Mayfield sent an email update to constituents offering what she believes are the sound and legal reasons why House Republican abandoned the capitol three days before the scheduled adjournment of the 2015 legislative session. Whatever mind Mayfield has, hers is certainly not a legal mind. At least five members of the Florida Supreme Court do not agree with the rational Mayfield and her fellow House Republicans gave for deserting their posts and failing to fulfill their responsibility to Floridians.

  1. The court should have ordered the House back to work. Upholding the rule of law is never “fruitless.” The House’s decision to abandon their constitutional duty is, in effect, a public sector strike.
