“You Can’t Take It With You” opens at Theatre Guild 

thisweekend-143319The Vero Beach Theatre Guild, 2020 San Juan Avenue, presents You Can’t Take It with You on stage from May 14th through 24th. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play starts with the budding romance between Tony Kirby and Alice Sycamore. When Tony accidentally brings his parents to dinner at the Sycamores’ house the night before they are expected, they encounter all the interesting characters living in the Sycamore’s home, including ones who have stopped by and never left. After an explosive evening, the Kirby’s decide Alice is not the girl for Tony. Maybe the Grand Duchess of Russia will change their minds. he Homeless Family Center invites the public to the HFC Kids Got Talent Show that includes original skits, popular songs, and choreographed dances to be performed by children living at the Homeless Family Center, on Friday, May 15th, from 4 to 6 pm. The Riverside Theatre presents comedians Mike Rivera and Josh Phillips on Friday and Saturday, May 15th & 16th with shows at 7:30 and 9:30 pm. 2015 Pioneer Dinner to honor Knight family – On Saturday, May 16th, Vero Heritage, Inc. will honor the Knight family at its 16th Family Recognition Dinner at the Heritage Center, 2140 14th Avenue in Vero Beach. Each year, Vero Heritage, Inc. honors a family who has contributed to the growth and progress of Indian River County. Cocktails are at 6:00 pm, dinner is at 7:00 pm with a short program following the dinner. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the Heritage Center or by calling 772-770-2263 or e-mailing info@VeroHeritage.org. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Heritage Center and the Indian River Citrus Museum.

Enjoy an upbeat evening of songs from this 75-voice local chorus directed by Dr. Michael Carter beginning at 7 pm at the First Baptist Church, 2206 16th Avenue in Vero Beach. On the program is What A Wonderful World written in 1967, Route 66 from 1946, I Won’t Dance from 1934 and All That Jazz from the musical Chicago written in 1975. thisweekend-socialJusticeFilmThe free Social Justice Film Series continues on Sunday, May 17th, at 7 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, on the southeast corner of 27th Avenue and 16th Street, with two short documentary films. The first film, To Prison for Poverty, exposes private probation companies that profit from charging excessive fees to low income people who can’t pay small fines like traffic tickets. If they can’t pay, they go to jail. The second film, Over Criminalized explores why we are criminalizing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse. Following the short films, Sgt. Flowers from the Indian River County Sheriff Public Affairs Department will share information about their procedures and programs in Indian River County. Call 772-778-5880.

thisweekend-rubinstein_montenegroDay Trippin’ with Patti & Vicky will travel to a special Helena Rubenstein exhibit at the Boca Raton Museum of Art on May 20th called “Beauty is Power”. Helena Rubenstein commissioned Salvador Dali to design packaging for her compacts and to paint her portrait. He was not the only famous artist to paint Ms. Rubenstein, and this exhibit will include her portraits by Picasso, Man Ray and Warhol. Also included in the exhibit are paintings by Miro and Chagall and selections from her fine jewelry and couture clothing collections. The cost is $85 per person. Lunch on your own at Max’s Grille.
