In a report posted May 30, TCPalm investigative journalist Scott Wyland confirmed suspicions raised more than a year ago about maintenance issues at Florida Power & Light’s St. Lucie Nuclear Plant. The likely astronomical cost of replacing prematurely worn cooling tubes at the plant, some 4,300 of them, will ultimately be born by FPL’s ratepayers. Spokespersons for FPL continue to insist all is well.

Thank you for keeping a continued focus on safety issues at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. Any citizen who has concerns about the operations can and should make a report to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The web site is: http://www.nrc.gov. The operations at the St.:Lucie Nuclear Power Plant are under the jurisdiction of Region II of the NRC. Any documentation that is not able to be sent electronically can be sent to: Marguis One Tower, 245 Peachtree Street,. Suite 1200,.Atlanta. GA 30303. Also, the general public can request relevant documentation by submitting a Freedom of Information Act request.
The FP&L ratepayers are not the only ones who pay for nuclear energy. Thanks to the Florida legislature the taxes collected go into a fund for any future nuclear power plant being built in Florida. This nuclear tax is imposed on all Florida citizens. It is an economic burden for all energy users. Any candidate seeking to be elected to the Florida legislature should be asked to pledge to remove this unnecessary economic drain
