FREE ADMISSION SATURDAY AT THE VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

Saturday, August 29th is Free Admission Saturday at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Drive. On view now is “James Prosek: Ocean Fishes”, featuring twenty-two life-size mixed media paintings of some of the most well- known species of saltwater fish in the world, drawn from numerous private collections as well as the studio of the artist. Treasure Coast residents and visitors will be familiar with many of the fishes that the artist portrays, such as the Red Snapper, Grouper Tarpon, and Snook. Others, such as the Mako Shark and Sailfish, are more often the subject of curiosity than direct knowledge. Published in his book Ocean Fishes (available for purchase in the Museum Store), Prosek’s paintings portray Atlantic game fish still shining with the hues of life. Interestingly, he views some paintings as “self-portraits,” because he sometimes sees his own reflection in the eye of a fish.

The new exhibition of a portion of the Museum’s permanent collection “From Painting to Video” showcases approximately 40 works in varied media. Various artists and their signature works are featured in the exhibition, including Alex Katz, whose boldly delineated Swimmer (1974) reduces portraiture to its simplest terms. Other highlighted artists include César Martínez, a major figure in the Chicano art movement of the 1980s and his striking portrait Bato Verde (1982) (pictured at right); Luis Montoya and Leslie Ortiz, creators of Surprise Box (2000), a delightful trompe l’oeil cast bronze sculpture; Sharon Quasius, sculptor of Watson and the Shark (1982), a soft relief constructed of stuffed cotton duck; and Jennifer Steinkamp, whose video installation, Fly to Mars 5 (2005), centers on a maple tree that cycles through four seasons, and many others.
FUN FOR CHILDREN
Drop in to the museum on Saturday between 10 am and 1 pm for Kidz Art Shop “If Fish Could Fly”. This hands on class for children is free for Museum Household members and above, and $2 per child for non members.
