Wilson’s warped sense of the truth

COMMENTARY

MARK SCHUMANN

truth squadWhen civic activist, Charlie Wilson, takes to the podium, as he so frequently does, the former city-councilman-for-a-month is sure to say something outrageous, if not wholly disconnected from reality. Today, though, Wilson top even himself.

In a exchange with Vice Mayor Jay Kramer, Wilson, who is arguably the sleaziest politician to every to appear on the scene in Vero Beach, said, “Mr. Kramer, you wouldn’t know the truth if it bit you.”

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Kramer, he is, without question, an honest and decent public servant. Wilson’s junior-high-style criticism of Kramer revealed all that needs to be said about Wilson, and was in no way reflective of Mr. Kramer’s character.

It was Wilson, remember, who was removed from his seat on the City Council by court order for not having been exactly truthful about his residency qualification.

  1. Charlie Wilson hit an even new low for him at today’s council meeting. His falsehoods and twisting of the facts paled in comparison to his personal attacks aimed at Vice Mayor Kramer. For a man who was removed from office by a judge and lost last year’s election by a wide margin, he certainly isn’t listened to by many people, yet he comes to our council meetings with his name calling and low class political words .His outrageous behavior gives Vero a black eye. Many suspect he was there more as a political campaign manager than a concerned civic activist. Mr Joseph Guffanti was also at the meeting putting on a display that puts Wilson to shame. Most of us know Joe as a gadfly who ran for city council and the man who received the lowest vote total in recent history.

  2. It seems pointless to continually publish the City’s ground rules for public comment, when people like Guffanti and Wilson are allowed to act as they do. In stark contrast to Wilson and Guffanti, Mark Mucher, though he may strongly disagree with certain council members, asks well-reasoned questions, often makes important points, and does so without being disrespectful.

  3. Yes.Mark, you are correct about Mark Mucher . He does behave as a gentleman in contrast To Wilson and Guffanti, who usually act with extreme rantings and ravings at council meetings. Everything Wilson says has a political agenda and based on his actions leave most people with a deep distrust of whatever he says. His ego and hubris pollute Vero Council meetings. He is probably the most disliked and distrusted politician in the county. I do not think he has gotten over his crushing defeat in last year;s city election, or his removal from office several years ago. Mr Guffanti;s tough guy routine is a sham. His statement to Vice Mayor Kramer to meet in the parking lot, says all that has to be said about him.
