David and Barbara Kahn are Manhattan art gallery owners. Their domestic tranquility is shattered upon the arrival of Barbara’s uptight sister, Trudy, her CPA husband, Martin and her archetypal Jewish mother, Sophie. They are there to save their college student daughter from the horrors of living only for sex. The comic sparks begin to fly when Sophie hits it off with elderly artist, Maurice, the art dealer’s best client! “Grand Canyon Mule Ride” and “Hiking Grand Canyon” are the first films of the season that will be shown on Thursday, January 7th, at 3 p.m. in the North Indian River County Library.

Friday, Jan. 8

The Space Coast Symphony rings in the New Year with four powerhouse soloists during the Rodgers & Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber Experience on Friday, January 8th at 7 pm at the Sebastian River High School Performing Arts Center, 9001 90th Avenue in Sebastian. Soprano Yvonne Gonzales Redman of the Metropolitan Opera and Soprano Sharon Yost, along with tenor Kyle Jones and baritone Michael John Foster will perform popular songs from Cats, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Evita, Cinderella and many more. $20 advance tickets are available at http://www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org. The concert is free for those aged 18 and under or with a student ID. Tickets at the door are $25.

Hungrytown (Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson) will perform on Friday, January 8th from 7 to 9 pm at the North Indian River County Library in Sebastian. Rebecca is a songwriter, singer and guitar player and Ken plays multiple instruments including bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo and harmonica. Admission is free. weekend - webPatrick_Dougherty_LearningCurve_JonatahnMathisBeginning Wednesday, January 6th, acclaimed landscape artist Patrick Dougherty will spend three weeks building one of his large-scale “Stickwork” creations at McKee Botanical Garden. Working with a team of volunteers, Dougherty will use sweet gum and maple saplings woven together to construct a one-of-a-kind Roman temple sculpture that will intermix with the lush, tropical surroundings of McKee’s Royal Palm Grove.

 

weekend - web-Self Portrait-Sean Sexton (1)The Center for Spiritual Care, 1550 24th Street in Vero Beach presents “As Above, So Below”, recalling an ancient mystical tradition of linking the heavenly to the earthly with paintings and ceramic works by Sean Sexton (at right) through February 26th. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Friday, January 8th.

The Laura Riding Jackson Foundation presents a Teen writers Workshop with Leslie McGuirk discussing the creative process in Novel Writing for Teens.
