Two commenters to an online story about Indian River County Commissioner Tim Zorc’s travels to Iowa on behalf of presidential candidate Ted Cruz raised questions about the Commissioner’s travel expenses.

Over the past two years, Zorc has diligently attended meetings of the Florida Municipal Power Agency Board in Orlando. Those meetings can be heard and followed via conference call.

Zorc has also made a number of trips to Tallahassee on county business, most recently to attend the Florida Supreme Court’s oral arguments in the County Commission appeal of a ruling by the Florida Public Service Commission. At no expense to the County, Zorc could have watched the court proceeding via a livestream broadcast over the internet.

For his travels on behalf of the County over the past two year Zorc has been reimbursed $18,539.79 in taxpayer money. None of those expenses were in connection with his political activities in support of Ted Cruz.

Following is an itemized listing of Zorc’s 201402015 travel reimbursements from the County.

  1. Do the other County Commissioners rack up comparable travel expenditures? Over $18,000 for 2 years seems a little high–especially when it is debatable if attending all events in person was necessary. Duck Key? Hmmmm

  2. Cathy, I have made a public records request of the County seeking the total travel and travel related expenses paid on behalf of or reimbursed to each County Commissioner over the past two years. When that information is made available, I will post it.
